Downtown Pensacola's holiday season was scheduled to open last night, Wednesday, Nov. 4. The plan had Santa arriving at the Pensacola Museum of History tree at 3:30 p.m., more than a half-million lights switching on along Palafox Street at 5 p.m., and the 10th Annual Holiday Haul running from 5 to 8. The Downtown Improvement Board calls it a seven-week celebration. For anyone who lives within a short drive of Palafox, most of those seven weeks happen on Wednesday evenings.
Starting Wednesday, Nov. 11, the Palafox Market Holiday Edition meets every Wednesday evening at MLK Jr. Plaza through Dec. 16. Wednesday also falls in the cheapest stretch of the week for City curbside parking. The season's big set pieces, including Winterfest's opening, the Christmas parade, both Gallery Nights and The Nutcracker, land on four weekends layered over that weekly market.
What opening night was built to set up
The DIB first posted its holiday plan on Sept. 23 and updated it on Oct. 24, two weeks after Hurricane Isaias. The Nov. 4 date did not change. During the storm, the Pensacola News Journal reported that downtown was one of the few areas with power as recovery began.
The opening-night program brought in Winterfest too, with the Grinch joining Santa at the Museum of History and Winterfest's mini-train circling Plaza Ferdinand from 5 to 8 p.m. The Holiday Haul's list of participating shops was long. It included Artesana, Blue Morning Gallery, Bodacious Book Store, Bubba's Sweet Spot, Don Alans, First City Bee Company, Indigeaux Denim Bar & Boutique, Innerlight Surf Shop, Noteworthy, Peterbrooke, Rusted Arrow Mercantile and Sarah Soule Webb Studio, among others.
Opening night was also scheduled as the only time the holiday market sets up in Plaza Ferdinand. The DIB scheduled the kickoff there from 3:30 to 8 p.m. as the Holiday Edition's "first and only night" in that plaza. After that, it moves a few blocks to MLK Jr. Plaza for the rest of the season.
Six Wednesdays at MLK Jr. Plaza
The DIB describes the Wednesday market as taking place "under thousands of twinkling lights." Counted from the first full week through the Dec. 16 finale, the season has six Wednesday evenings:
- Nov. 11. The first Wednesday at MLK Jr. Plaza.
- Nov. 18. The last Wednesday before Gallery Night on Friday, Nov. 20.
- Nov. 25. The night before Thanksgiving and three days before Shop Small Saturday.
- Dec. 2. The first market of December.
- Dec. 9. Three days before the Christmas parade.
- Dec. 16. The last Holiday Edition, two days before The Nutcracker opens at the Saenger.
The weekend market keeps running as usual. The regular Saturday Palafox Market is open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at both MLK Jr. Plaza and Plaza Ferdinand, so the two plazas share Saturday mornings while Wednesday evenings belong to the holiday edition.
The parking math favors midweek
The City's curbside rates make the weekday case clearly. Curbside spots cost $1 an hour Tuesday through Thursday and $1.75 an hour after 6 p.m. Friday and on Saturday. The Jefferson Street Parking Garage is $1.75 an hour, and parking is free on Sunday and Monday, along with some select lots.
So a Wednesday market visit costs 75 cents an hour less at the curb than a Friday Gallery Night or the Saturday parade. Over a two-hour evening, that comes to $2 on a Wednesday and $3.50 at the Friday-night and Saturday rate. The holiday market's night falls inside the City's lowest-priced paid parking days. Rates, the interactive parking map and lot details are on ParkPensacola.
Where the weekends stack up
Downtown's major holiday events fall on four weekends, and each lands right after one of the Wednesday markets.
Nov. 20: Gallery Night
Gallery Night Pensacola lists Friday, Nov. 20 as its "Festival of Living Art." Two days earlier is the Nov. 18 Wednesday market, a quieter way to see the lights ahead of the Friday event.
Nov. 27 and 28: Winterfest's opening and Shop Small Saturday
Winterfest names its Elf Parade on Friday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. downtown as its 2026 opening night, the day after Thanksgiving. Dates and tickets for the trolley tours and mini-train rides through Plaza Wonderland on Palafox Place are on the Winterfest calendar. The next day is Shop Small Saturday, when the DIB's "All I Want" Holiday Giveaway gives double entries for every $10 spent at participating downtown businesses. The Nov. 25 market comes just before all of this, so a single week holds a Wednesday evening at MLK Jr. Plaza, a Friday afternoon parade and a Saturday of double-entry shopping.
Dec. 12 to Dec. 20: the parade, Gallery Night and The Nutcracker
The Spectrum Pensacola Christmas Parade steps off Saturday, Dec. 12 at 5:30 p.m. along historic Palafox Street. The following week is the busiest stretch of the season:
- Wednesday, Dec. 16: The final Palafox Market Holiday Edition at MLK Jr. Plaza.
- Friday, Dec. 18: Gallery Night's "Home for the Holidays," on the same evening Ballet Pensacola opens The Nutcracker at the Saenger Theatre at 7 p.m.
- Saturday, Dec. 19: Nutcracker performances at 1:30 and 7 p.m.
- Sunday, Dec. 20: The final Nutcracker matinee at 1:30 p.m. and the last day of the "All I Want" giveaway.
That Sunday matinee is also a good time to drive in, because Sunday curbside parking is free.
The giveaway runs the whole calendar
The "All I Want" Holiday Giveaway connects the Wednesdays and the weekends. It started Nov. 4 and runs through Dec. 20, so it covers all six Wednesday markets and every weekend event above. Shoppers earn an entry for every $10 spent at participating downtown businesses, and the DIB awards weekly prizes. The prize list ranges from dinners and spa treatments to original art and clothing, with a $1,000 grand prize in downtown gift cards. Full rules are at downtownpensacola.com/AllIWant.
The weekly prize schedule rewards steady visits more than one big shopping trip. Buying a gift on Palafox before or after a Wednesday market adds entries in a week that also has a drawing, and Shop Small Saturday on Nov. 28 doubles the count for that one day.
A newer stop is open for the walk back to the car, too. Lennys Grill & Subs opened at 96 E. Garden Street on July 30 with a late-night walk-up window, the company's first. That makes it this neighborhood's newest after-dark option on a market night.
The last Wednesday Holiday Edition at MLK Jr. Plaza is Dec. 16, and Saturday morning Palafox Markets continue at both plazas after that.
Downtown's holiday calendar is one of the reasons people choose to live near Palafox, and the Mark Lee Team watches it as closely as the market. If you own a home within walking distance of these plazas and want to know what it's worth this season, Request a Complimentary Market Evaluation.
